Ask the Expert: Staying on Track: Enjoying Holiday Feasts Without Tipping the Scale

7 hours ago 7

Holiday season is fast approaching and these irresistible feasts are sure to be delightful, but do they need to cause weight gain? Growing up in Texas, these feasts were always filled with family specialty dishes and desserts that had my family going for seconds. Yet, with the ongoing obesity crises that leads to many unhealthy conditions, we all should pay closer attention to what we consume. Many people have healthy lifestyle goals we wish to achieve; but, this season can turn a “cheat day” into a downward spiral of bad habits lasting after the leftovers are gone. Here are a few ideas to help not pack on the pounds and stay on track this holiday season.

Watch liquid calories: Certain drinks have calories equivalent to a small snack, so switching to unsweet tea flavored with fresh fruits or choosing sparkling flavored water can help us stay hydrated and satisfy sweet cravings. Zero-sugar sodas along with choosing wine over beer and mixed drinks will help limit added calories.

Fresh ingredients over canned: Some processed canned goods can double the amount of calories we consume, especially those with added sugars or syrups. Instead, swap canned for fresh ingredients, like fresh cranberries and yams over those canned in syrup. Even swapping chopped onions over fried onions can eliminate added calories.

Be Mindful: A popular social media phrase can apply to the Holidays by remembering to reflect on the true reason we are celebrating. Also, slow down and enjoy the meal. Taking your time while eating helps our bodies feel fuller faster so we don’t overindulge.

Stay Active: Whether you start the day off with a nice stretch or walk or take one after the big meal, this will help to avoid sitting on the couch all day.

We hope you enjoy your Holiday Season with your family and friends, but if you still feel that you are struggling with weight after making these changes and more throughout the years, give my office a call. We can set up an appointment to discuss possible surgical weight loss options here in Cameron County.
