Time to Act Before It’s Too Late
Growing up in South Texas, I’ve seen the ongoing struggle with diabetes. While 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes, the rate in South Texas is much higher—estimated at 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 adults. Additionally, nearly 100 million Americans have pre-diabetes, with over 80% unaware of their condition. This is concerning, especially since there is a strong link between diabetes and obesity, and studies show type 2 diabetes can be more aggressive in children than in adults. To combat this growing crisis, we must shift our focus from treating diabetes to effective prevention strategies.
Lifestyle choices can always be changed to some extent. We all have room for improvement. Even when eating on the go, you can choose water over sugary drinks or opt for an entrée without sides—think burger with no fries. Portion control is much more important than types of foods. Be cautious with juices, flavored milk, energy drinks, and smoothies, as they often contain high amounts of sugar despite misleading labels.
The most important change is to try our best to stay active and eat healthier. There is no magic pill, and there is no quick fix. It is easier said than done, and trying to do it yourself is not always feasible. Dietitians, counselors, trainers, and friends are all great resources even before you get to your medical clinic.
Everyone is busy these days, but we have to make time to take care of ourselves if we expect to stay healthy enough to take care of those around us. Screening is critical, especially for conditions like diabetes and pre-diabetes. You cannot fix a problem unless you face it head on because this is not a situation where ignorance is bliss. Too many people take their health for granted, so please go and get yourself screened. We cannot change everything all at once, but small positive steps in the right direction will help us build a healthier future.
