SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County is temporarily closing Andy Bowie Park in South Padre Island at County Beach Access No. 2 for a renovation project.
During a groundbreaking ceremony at the park, Cameron County officials said some of its current structures such as the pavilions posed safety concerns.
"This pavilion has been here for over thirty years and we want this pavilion to be here to serve the residents of Cameron County and the visitors for many generations to come," said Cameron County Parks and Recreation Director Joe Vega.
The Andy Bowie Park was originally built in 1994. Vega said the park's structures have exceeded their serviceable life.
The park's two existing pavilions will be replaced with new, elevated plaza pavilions. The restrooms, concession stand and bathhouses will also be upgraded and refurbished.
When asked about the safety concerns of the pavilions, Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino said they have been deteriorating for the last several years.
"We knew that a renovation and refurbishment was needed out here for a number of reasons," Judge Trevino said. "Among them obviously is public safety."
The project will cost $6.9 million. The county was able to secure federal funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). An additional $2 million was donated by SpaceX.
SpaceX General Manager Kathryn Lueders said SpaceX will continue their partnership to enhance Cameron County areas.
"It means a lot to us to be able to enhance the community that has really welcomed our folks," she said.
Renovations are expected to take one year and would revitalize the park for the thousands who visit every year.
