EDINBURG — An Alton man accused in the fatal drive-by shooting of a 6-year-old Mission girl has pleaded guilty to murder after reaching a plea deal that requires his testimony in his co-defendant’s trial.
Juan Roman Garcia Olaguez, 47, pleaded guilty to the murder of Yvone Adele Mireles Monday and is now facing between five to 30 years in prison so long as he testifies truthfully against his co-defendant William Garcia, of Mission.
Marco Antonio Reyes Chairez, 46, of Alton, another co-defendant, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty at the start of his trial on April 4, 2023.
The fourth co-defendant, 47-year-old Edinburg resident Daniel Guzman Flores, remains incarcerated on $575,000 in bonds at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center and had his hearing rescheduled for February.
Guzman and Garcia are charged with capital murder of a child and murder. They have pleaded not guilty.
At the hearing, state District Judge Noe Gonzalez stated that jury selection for Garcia’s trial is set for Tuesday.
Making sure Olaguez understood the deal, Gonzalez explained that he can still receive the maximum of 30 years which would be determined by him at a later date.
“However, there’s something you have to do before they honor the deal,” Gonzalez said.
In order to be eligible, Olaguez will need to testify against Garcia during his trial and tell the truth or lose the deal.
Garcia, who was 30 years old at the time of the shooting, was released from jail on Aug. 31, 2021 on $125,000 in bonds, according to jail records.
At 5:07 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2021, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call reporting deadly conduct at the 2400 block of Valencia Avenue.
According to police, around four vehicles showed up and fired about 30 rounds into the house where Mireles was in.
Inside the 6-year-old girl was watching television with her little brother when a bullet hit her in the head killing her instantly.
The four men were indicted on June 7, 2021.
“These individuals … obviously did a drive-by shooting,” Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said during a press conference then. “These individuals are cowards and because it was a 6-year-old child involved, an innocent 6-year-old child, all members of my staff, and especially my Major Crimes Unit, we’re going to work tirelessly until we bring all the suspects in this case to justice.”
