Agency holds resource fair for residents affected by sugar mill layoffs

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Community Service Agency is presenting "Operation Soft Landing" for Hidalgo County residents who were laid off after the closure of the Rio Grande Valley Sugar Grower, Inc.

‘Great sadness’: Last sugar operation in Texas to permanently close

According to the agency, the goal is to provide employment, job training, and social services to those residents who were affected by the closure.

The event will take place Wednesday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at La Villa City Hall, located at 916 Mike Chapa Rd.

Agencies and employers taking part include: Hidalgo County Community Service Agency, Hidalgo County Precinct One, Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement, South Texas College, Texas State Technical College, Workforce Solutions, Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley
Southern Industrial Careers, and the City of La Villa.
