BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The affordable housing market is improving in the Rio Grande Valley’s largest city.
Nine houses have been completed and are now available within the perimeters of the Brownsville Country Club area.
Dawn Buckingham, commissioner with the Texas General Land Office, celebrated the occasion during a ribbon cutting ceremony held Thursday May 29, for what is known as BCC Village Townhouses.
Buckingham said TGLO has been able to help thousands of families to move into affordable houses. She gave credit to the different entities working together to provide better places to live for the residents their community.
“Every Texan deserves access to safe, resilient housing—especially those hit hardest by past disasters,” Buckingham said. “BBC Village Townhouses represent the kind of future-focused investment that strengthens communities and helps provide much needed affordable rental housing for our working class neighbors.”
The units are part of 32 townhouses built on a 5.33-acre master plan complex through a $4.45 million Community Development Block Grant awarded by TGLO.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen said the completion of the new units plus the others coming soon marks a great day for the City of Brownsville.
“There is a lot going on here today,” he said. “We have more than $40 billion in projects taking place but having more affordable places has been a concern.”
Cowen said the new complex should alleviate that sector of the economy.
Another example of that: Cowen mentioned the $140 million being invested in 44 units at El Jardin Hotel.
BBC Village Townhouses is one of many projects TGLO has been involved in this region of Texas.
The state agency has awarded more than $109 million in funding to improve infrastructure projects and mitigate against future disaster damages in the RGV.
It has also allocated more than $34.6 million to help build more under the Affordable Rental Program and Disaster Recovery Reallocation Program, or DRRP.
The agency has helped nearly 400 RGV homeowners rebuild after the 2018 and 2019 floods.
