A not so 'gold' inspection finds 24 violations at tortilleria

1 week ago 34

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — In this week’s Food 4 Thought, the Food Patrol is heading to a tortilleria whose name implies they are made of gold, but the inspector says otherwise.

First, we visited a restaurant that serves food to people who save lives and in some cases are going through the hardest time in their lives.

We surprised the team at Platillo’s Mexican Restaurant with this week’s Top Performer sticker.

“Thank you very much, we appreciate you guys," said manager Rudy Perez. "We’ve been here 24 years we’re well known here."

We missed the lunch rush, with plenty of hungry nurses, doctors, and families.

Platillo's is less than one mile away from Valley Baptist Medical Center and they sometimes serve families who need a bit of peace on a plate because who knows what they’re going through.

Ted Abundez has been feeding the people who take care of others for over two decades and ask for him by name.

“I have some friends that were little and they call me uncle. They told me, 'Hey, let's go to my uncle's restaurant'. There’s a young lady right now who is going to school and the last time I was here, she was so happy to see me, and I was happy to see her that was a nice feeling," he said.

Taking care of people who take care of people is part of the recipe for success right here at Platillo's.

That's que rico but it's que asco time!

The Food Patrol is heading to Tortilleria El Grano De Oro located on 10323 E Monte Cristo Rd. in Edinburg.

They had 24 violations on their June 18 inspection.

Violations included:

  • Off-temperature foods
  • Dishes being washed incorrectly
  • Bugs were able to get into their pizza room because the doors weren’t sealed
  • Toxic items were exposed to food

The Food Patrol stopped to see if they were gold like the name implies, but could not get a straight answer.

“She needs to call someone else," said an employee.

So we waited. They said they’d call us after the Labor Day break on Tuesday.

We did not receive a call or were allowed to check to see if corrections had been made.
