7 school board races voted on across Hidalgo County

Voters across Hidalgo County on Tuesday went to the polls to vote in school board races for the Hidalgo, Mercedes, La Villa, South Texas ISD, Edcouch-Elsa, Valley View and La Joya school districts.

Hidalgo ISD had four contested races up for grabs.

For Place 1, Diana Silva-Gaona won the race with 1,119 votes, or 54.01%, compared to incumbent Norma Torres receiving 953 votes, or 45.99%

For Place 2, incumbent Raymundo Ray Martinez won reelection with 1,207 votes, or 58.56%, compared to Frank Cruz who garnered 854 votes, or 41.44%.

For Place 6, Jennifer Quintero received 937 votes, or 45.11%, while Pedro Flores got 642 votes, or 30.91 %, prompting a runoff election. Incumbent Rafael “Ralph” Garza garnered 498 votes, or 23.98%.

For Place 7, incumbent Luis Trejo Jr. won reelection with 1,319 votes, or 64.63%, to Guadalupe “Lupe” Solano’s 722 votes, or 35.37%.

At Mercedes ISD, Place 5 is heading toward a runoff election with Rachel Trevino receiving 1,993 votes, or 44.14%, and incumbent Lucy Delgado garnering 1,362 votes, or 30.17%. Joaquin Hernandez Jr. received 1,160 votes, or 25.69%.

For Place 6, Ricardo “Rick” Hinojosa won the race with 3,057 votes, or 66.17%, with incumbent Pete Martinez receiving 1,563 votes, or 33.83%.

Place 7 results show a runoff election between incumbent Eddie Howell Jr. who received 1,755 votes, or 37.94%, and Horacio Pequeno who garnered 1,572 votes, or 33.98%. Ruben Chano Guajardo received 1,299, or 28.08%.

La Villa ISD Place 1 is heading toward a runoff election between incumbent David Hayez Alaniz with 380 votes, or 42.70%, and Andy Garza who garnered 325 votes, or 36.52%. Fidel Guzman Jr. received 185 votes, or 20.79%.

For Place 2, incumbent Marianna Reyna won reelection with 478 votes, or 52.93%, against Robert Perez who received 425 votes, or 47.07%.

For Place 3, Noe M. Castillo Jr. ran unopposed and garnered 751 votes.

For Place 4, Edward Garcia won the seat with 526 votes, or 59.30%, compared to Ray Arnold Tamez who received 361 votes, or 40.70%.

At South Texas ISD for Hidalgo County Precinct 1, incumbent Sandra Ochoa won reelection with 26,004 votes, or 64.80%, compared to Homero Garcia who received 14,128 votes, or 35.20%

For Valley View ISD Place 4, incumbent Mario Degollado won reelection with 2,530 votes, or 62.44%, compared to Lucio Villagomez garnering 1,522 votes, or 37.56%.

For Place 5, incumbent Jaime Gaona ran unopposed and received 3,637 votes.

For Place 6, incumbent Juan Viveros won reelection with 2,158 votes, or 53.35%, with Claudia Hinojosa garnering 1,887 votes, or 46.65%.

For Place 7, Marisol Peña won the seat with 2,837 votes, or 70.61 %, with Samuel Herevia garnering 1,181 votes, or 29.39%.

Edcouch-Elsa ISD Place 2 and 3 are heading to a runoff election.

For the Place 2 runoff election, Cynthia Cindy Tanguma garnered 2,081 votes, or 41.09%, while Jarrett Castillo received 1,718 votes, or 33.93%. Incumbent Tony Barco only garnered 1,265 votes, or 24.98%.

For the Place 3 runoff election, Norma Linda Peña received 2,190 votes, or 43.83%, with Dulce Ybarra receiving 1,621 votes, or 32.44%. Incumbent Chris Morales only garnered 1,186 votes, or 23.73%.

For Place 6, Ashley Vasquez won the seat with 3,031 votes, or 61.24%, while incumbent Robert Schmalrzied received 1,918 votes, or 38.76%.

For Place 7, Rollie Lozano won election with 2,553 votes, or 51.72%, with Abiud Jimenez right behind them with 2,383 votes, or 48.28%.

In La Joya ISD, the district elected board is essentially powerless due to the Texas Education Agency installing a board of managers and a new superintendent in February. Even with that, there are several races being contested.

In Place 4, Aurora Garza won the seat with 6,796 votes, or 51.33%, while Eden Ramirez garnered 6,444 votes, or 48.67%.

In Place 5, Judy Solis ran unopposed and received 11,918 votes.

Place 6 was also unopposed with David Ramirez who garnered 11,658 votes.

In Place 7, Jerry Alaniz won the race with 7,322 votes, or 55.25%, while Fausto Salinas Jr. garnered 5,930 votes, or 44.75%.
