$18M in additional federal support for South Texas communities receiving migrants

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Shelter and Services Program announced Tuesday an additional $17,955,991 will be used for border communities and entities providing humanitarian services to migrants.

The news release said the funding will go directly to eligible local governments and non-federal entities throughout South Texas. It is in addition to the $17,759,130 allocated to South Texas in April 2024 from the same program.  

“I am pleased to announce this additional funding to support the safe, orderly, and humane management of incoming migrants. Our communities should not alone bear the logistical and financial burden of an issue that affects our entire nation," said Congressman Vicente Gonzalez.  

Both the previous funding in April and the recently announced additional funding were authorized through the Fiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act. The additional funding totals over $380 million nationwide in unprecedented supplemental support through the SSP program.

Entities in South Texas that will receive additional SSP funding are as follows: 

  • $8,788,186 for Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley   
  • $5,877,016 for the City of Brownsville   
  • $3,290,789 for Good Neighbor Settlement House    

Entities in South Texas that received the first round of SSP funding in April of 2024 are as follows: 

  • $3,921,965 for the City of McAllen 
  • $216,000 for Iglesia Bautista West Brownsville 
  • $1,921,965 for the City of Brownsville 
  • $350,000 for the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center 
  • $7,421,965 for Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley 
  • $1,636,235 for Good Neighbor Settlement House 
  • $615,000 for the Salvation Army Corps Center 
  • $1,100,000 for La Posada Providencia 
  • $360,000 for Team Brownsville
