A 37-year-old woman on Friday pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging her with manslaughter and intoxication manslaughter for a fatal crash in Rio Hondo more than two years ago that killed a 25-year-old man.

Kristina Yadira Roiz was indicted by a Cameron County grand jury on the charges on Oct. 16 and appeared for her arraignment Friday, court records show.

She’s accused of disregarding a stop sign in Rio Hondo while under the influence of alcohol and crashing into a truck driven by Daniel Manuel Olivarez, who died, on Sept. 23, 2022.

The crash happened at about 11:17 p.m. that day on FM 2925 and SH 106.

In a news release, the Texas Department of Public Safety said previously that Roiz — who the agency did not identify at the time — was driving a Mitsubishi Mirage south on FM 2925 when she disregarded a stop sign at the intersection and crashed into Olivarez’s Dodge Ram truck.

She was taken to the hospital as was Olivarez, who died at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

In addition to alcohol, the indictment also alleges she had Alprazolam, a generic version of Xanax, and Midazolam, a sedative, in her body at the time of the crash.

Her next court hearing is in early February.
