A woman in Rio Grande City was arrested Tuesday after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found over 190 pounds of methamphetamine inside her vehicle.
Berenice Serrano Lopez was arrested when entering the U.S. from Mexico in a red SUV where authorities found 191 pounds of methamphetamine in 83 packages, according to a criminal complaint.
On Tuesday, Serrano, a U.S. citizen, entered the country through the Rio Grande City port of entry from Mexico in a red SUV as the sole occupant.
During the primary inspection, officers conducted a non-intrusive inspection using an X-ray system resulting in officers noticing several anomalies in the floorboard of the vehicle.
Officers then conducted an open-air sniff utilizing a K-9 unit who alerted them to the odor of narcotics, according to the complaint.
“During the search of the vehicle, CBP officers discovered an aftermarket compartment in the floorboard containing packages believed to be narcotics,” the complaint said.
The officers removed 83 packages which tested presumptively positive for the properties and characteristics of methamphetamine, weighing a total of 191 pounds.
In an interview with DEA agents, Serrano admitted to transporting narcotics for monetary gain.
Serrano is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Scott Hacker for her preliminary and detention hearing next week.
