EDINBURG — Nothing could separate the East and the West boys after four quarters at the All-Valley Showcase on Saturday at the Bert Ogden Arena.
It came down to sudden death, next basket wins after the players implored the staff at the arena for a finish. The Vipers hosted the Stockton Kings at 7 p.m. in their regular-season finale. So, the floor needed to be cleared as soon as possible.
It was physical, both teams had chances to finish it, but in the end McHi junior D’Aundre Canada scored the game-winning basket to give the West the 107-105 win. It was a sweep for the West, the girls dominated the East with a 105-61 victory before the boy’s exhilarating game.

“It was probably the best feeling in the world,” Canada said about the game-winner. “I did it earlier in the season, being able to take that last shot and everyone getting hyped — there is no better feeling than that.”
Canada was able to have that chance thanks to a great comeback by him and his teammates. The West was down 102-90 when him, La Joya Palmview’s Joe Gonzalez, Sharyland Pioneer’s Muhamed Shaath, McAllen Memorial’s Alex Monroy and Edinburg Vela’s Jordan Bustamante checked in.

Bustamante and Gonzalez scored the next 15 to send it to sudden death. The East took that 12-point lead after Weslaco High’s Pete Cantu and Harlingen South’s Kai Sepulveda scored 14 straight.
“It was a great game, this is my fourth time coaching it and today I think this was the best boys game since coaching it,” West coach, and a member of the staff for the Vipers Mire Chatman said. “It was an exciting game for the fans and for the players.”
Chatman is now 8-0 as a coach in the showcase and hopes to go 10-0 next year. He will have some of the same faces. There was over 35 boys and girls seniors participating. The seniors were given scholarships by the Vipers.

“I think the Valley has some good talent coming up, I think the seniors are leaving a good impression for the younger players to come up. In the game, everybody played hard and that’s good for the younger generation to see, so they can continue the same thing,” Chatman said.
Former Harlingen High boys head coach Greg Yates coached both East teams. The East girls kept it close early, but the depth of the West gave themselves a strong lead and they would not look back.
The West was up 50-27 at the half and won the game by 44 points.
