A 24-year-old Weslaco woman was arrested Thursday for the death of her 2-month-old daughter after authorities discovered the woman was on a “drug binge” and spent most of the day asleep.

Viridiana Nieto has been charged with criminal negligent homicide, endangering a child, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana following the death of her 2-month-old girl, according to a city of Edinburg news release.

At about 6:20 p.m. on Feb. 10, Edinburg police were dispatched to the 500 block of South Raul Longoria to assist emergency medical services with the unresponsive infant.

Nieto was at the scene with her two other children, a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old.

The infant was transported to South Texas Health System Children’s in Edinburg where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The child’s cause of death was not immediately clear.

“An extensive investigation by Edinburg police revealed that the mother … had reportedly been on a drug binge and had allegedly slept most of the day,” the release said.

An arrest warrant was issued for Nieto on April 21. It was later learned that Nieto was in Fort Worth and was located and taken into custody on May 6 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Nieto remains in custody on $1,532,500 in bonds.
