Weslaco shooting suspect issued $125K bond

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The 46-year-old suspect in a Weslaco shooting was arraigned Thursday afternoon.

Weslaco Police Department reports that Leobardo Martinez was identified as the suspect who fired multiple rounds using a rifle, injuring the victim.

Martinez was originally facing three charges:

  • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • Failure to identify
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon

His charges have been updated to:

  • Deadly conduct: $100,000
  • Fail to ID: $25,000

Background:

Officers responded to the shooting at 5:35 a.m. Sunday, at the 1800 block of W. Corpus Christi Dr.

The investigation indicates that the victim met with an acquaintance on Corpus Drive when an argument broke out.

At the time of the argument, Martinez proceeded to shoot the victim, the Weslaco PD reported.

As the victim had attempted to leave the scene, it is believed a firearm was discharged accidentally from inside the vehicle, which resulted in the victim having a gunshot wound.
