After canvassing the votes from the Nov. 5 election, the PSJA and Weslaco school boards welcomed newly elected trustees on Monday and also re-organized board leadership.
PSJA ISD voters elected three new members to the board. Ricardo Rodriguez for Place 4, Griselda Quintanilla for Place 5, and Ramona Barron for Place 6.
Voters also reelected incumbent Cynthia Gutierrez for Place 7.
Former school board President Carlos Villegas, Place 1, motioned to make Diana Serna, board trustee for Place 2, president. Quintanilla seconded the motion.
Everyone except Gutierrez voted to appoint Serna as the new school board president.
Serna then motioned to nominate Place 3 board member Yolanda Castillo as vice president but failed to garner enough votes.
Gutierrez then quickly made a motion to nominate Rodriguez as vice president. Everyone except Barron voted to appoint him to the position.
Gutierrez, again, quickly tried to make a motion, but Serna stopped her and requested that she wait.
“I’m conducting the meeting now, please wait,” Serna said to Gutierrez, before asking the district’s legal counsel, Ben Castillo, to remind the board of Robert’s Rules of Order per school board policy that the president has to recognize the board members before they speak.
Quintanilla motioned to nominate Barron for secretary and the board voted unanimously to appoint her.
Barron then motioned to appoint Quintanilla as assistant secretary, which was passed unanimously.
Weslaco ISD residents reelected incumbent Jacky Munoz Sustaita for Place 3 and voted in Eddie Serna for Place 1.
Marcos De Los Santos for Place 2 ran unopposed.
Board member Armando Cuellar nominated board Vice President Isidoro Nieto for president, which passed unanimously.
“Thank you for the nomination and the confidence, and we will continue as a team of eight to work together for the best interest of students and staff with Dr. Rivera,” Nieto said.
De Los Santos then nominated Cuellar as vice president and Jaime Rodriguez as secretary, with both passing unanimously.
