Weslaco police shoot, kill man who ‘reached’ for shotgun

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal Weslaco police shooting that happened late Thursday night.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said Weslaco police responded to a report of shots fired at 11:28 p.m. in the 700 block of Pueblo Street.

“Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered an armed Hispanic male who reached for a shotgun,” the release stated. “In response to the perceived threat, one of the officers discharged their weapon, striking the individual.”

The suspect, who was identified as 22-year-old Juan Diego Contreras, died at Knapp Medical Center.

The sheriff’s office is conducting the investigation at the Weslaco Police Department’s request.
