WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Weslaco Police Department was granted new electric bikes through a grant as part of the city's initiative to enhance community engagement.
The $11,475 grant was allocated to purchase five electric bikes.
"The idea is that the officers on bikes present a more approachable presence compared to those on patrol cars, and it facilitates positive interactions with the public," said Heriberto Caraveo, Public Information Officer with Weslaco PD.
Caraveo says the new bikes will improve mobility and access while providing broader patrol coverage.
"The bike patrols are proficiently effective for managing larger crowds and public events where mobility and visibility are crucial," Caraveo continued. "These e-bikes are here. They'll be hitting our streets here. They're pretty soon, maybe see our guys out there. Don't hesitate to say hello."
