WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A K9 officer with the Weslaco Police Department who passed away is being remembered for his service and companionship, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
The Weslaco Police Department announced Tuesday afternoon that K9 Officer Shayne died from health complications after a tumor was found in his abdomen and prostate.
"Shayne served our department and community with unwavering dedication, courage, and loyalty, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him," the Weslaco Police Department stated.

Shayne, a certified guide dog, was sworn in by former Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera in May 2023.
In addition to his K9 duties, Shayne also served as a therapy and emotional support animal for the community.
Before joining the Weslaco Police Department, Shayne graduated from Guide Dogs of the Desert in California and assisted people with disabilities in Oregon.
"Officer Shayne will forever be remembered," the Weslaco Police Department continued. "His paw prints will remain on our hearts always."
