Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies said Friday that the man whose body was recovered from a canal on Thursday drowned.

The man, who has yet to be identified, jumped into a canal on Mile 10 North Road in rural Weslaco, according to a news release.

According to the witnesses, the man never resurfaced after he entered the water.

“After a thorough review of the evidence, investigators have determined that the death was accidental,” the release said.

Emergency responders were also called to the scene but efforts to locate the man were unsuccessful until his body was later recovered.

An autopsy performed by the county medical examiner Friday morning confirmed the cause of the death was drowning.

“The autopsy found no signs of foul play, further supporting the conclusion of an accidental death,” the release said.

Investigators are currently waiting for the results of a fingerprint analysis to confirm the identity of the man.

The release stated no additional information regarding the victim will be released until positive identification is made and their next of kin has been notified.
