SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Gulf Guardians and the Surfrider UTRGV Chapter held a beach cleanup at the Cameron County Beach Access #6 over the weekend.
The Trash Free Gulf, a program of the Gulf Trust, aims to keep Texas waterways clean and prevent over 800 tons of trash from reaching the Gulf.
During the first two hours of the cleanup, volunteers reported that they had picked up more than 200 pounds of trash at the county beach.
"Not only picking up other people's trash, but just making sure that people are picking up their own trash, and keeping that out of our water," said Annie Zeiler, President of Surfrider Club. "Not only does it go into the ocean, it goes into our rivers, it leaches into our soil."
Zeiler added, information regarding the trash collected during the beach cleanup will be uploaded to the Texas Litter database, cataloging the types of trash that were collected.
