Vela girls golf teams wins District 31-5A title

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) -- The Vela girls golf team won its first district title in three seasons.

"It's a special, special accomplishment for these girls" said Vela girls golf coach Eloy Falcon. "It's a testament to the hard work and dedication that I feel they've been putting in."

A strong group of seniors led by Amber Martin propelled the squad to the District 31-5A Tournament title. Martin was also the top individual golfer at the district tournament.

"The team has done so good at working hard," Martin said. "We've gotten so close this year, and we just keep pushing each other. And I'm very excited to see what they have."

"Going into my this final district championship that it was going to be tough," added senior Rita Cruz. "It was something that all my teammates and me we worked really hard for."

"It was like a weight lifted off our shoulders cause all season we worked so hard," said senior Kylee Rocha. "We put our blood, sweat and tears into that trophy so it really paid off to hearing our names getting called."

The Vela girls golf team will compete at the regional tournament next week.
