Edinburg — The UTRGV baseball team, which is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls for the seventh week in a row, beat the McNeese Cowboys 5-3 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

The Vaqueros (28-15, 19-8 SLC) trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. Senior Steven Lancia hit a leadoff single against Jake Blackwell (3-2). One out later, junior Hank Warren walked and junior Rene Galván singled to load the bases. Junior Damien Whitfield then hit a go-ahead 2-run single. Graduate student Edinburg Vela alumnus Isaac Lopez followed with a bunt single on which Galván scored to put the Vaqueros up 5-3.

Lancia finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

That made a winner of freshman Harrison Thayer (3-2), who struck out four in 4.0 innings of relief while allowing one run on three hits and one walk.

The Vaqueros led early, going up 2-1 on first inning solo home runs by sophomores Armani Raygoza and Easton Moomau.

The Cowboys (30-10, 17-7 SLC) tied the game in the second on a home run by Easton Dowell before loading the bases with one out. Senior Jacob Limas got Mack Brousseau to ground into a double play. Limas went on to retire the last 10 hitters he faced while pitching 5.0 innings and striking out four without allowing a walk.

The next hit in the game by either team came in the seventh when Simon Larranaga hit a leadoff home run to give the Cowboys a 3-2 lead.

The Cowboys initially scored in the first on a two-out single by Larry Edwards Jr. to go up 1-0.

UTRGV plays its next six games on the road, starting with a two-game series at Texas Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
