PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — ValleyCentral spoke with the Pharr Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit about its service to the community.
The Mounted Patrol Unit is dedicated to patrolling large gatherings, such as parades, outdoor events, and demonstrations.
"It's a different patrol aspect for our community. We ride on horse, but while doing so, we are patrolling all the streets, community centers, shops, and alleyways in the City of Pharr," said Irving Segura, Supervisor for the Pharr Mounted Patrol Unit.
The Pharr Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit has been active for three years.
"The experience overall has been more of a pleasure. Being on top of the saddle, we're able to see, smell, and observe things that we normally wouldn't inside a vehicle," Segura continued. "It gives us the opportunity to sort of serve our community in a different approach."
Segura says it is a tough but rewarding job being a part of the Mounted Patrol Unit.
"It is a it's not easy work being on a horse. We do have the responsibilities of the horse itself, its care, and its maintenance," Segura said. "We are very prideful when it comes to being one of the few agencies in Texas that has an actual Mounted Patrol Unit."
