PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Volunteers from the Rio Grande Valley are lending a helping hand to those in Houston who were affected by Beryl.

Many across the Valley are now responding to the area, helping with clean-up and recovery efforts.

The American Red Cross in Harlingen is sending over a dozen volunteers to the Houston area to help with relief.

Executive Director Kayla Gonzalez says volunteers are working with Houston leaders to provide a wider range of care.

“From anything to being in shelter, sheltering, communicating with officials over there, just anywhere that we can. Providing food, warm meals to the families that were affected.”

While Gonzalez is not part of the group headed north, she is doing her best to help from afar.

"Virtually as an elected official of liaison. Emailing their judges making sure everything is good, if there’s anything that they’re needing.”

In Pharr, Home Depot Manager, Roy Sendejo organized the packing of care kits to Houston. He said with the amount of people helping, they finished in record time and allowed them to ship out faster.

“To get this going within 24 hours, we’ve got Team Depot- works with local and national nonprofit organizations so we were able to get a grant yesterday to do this and help out the community there in Houston," said Sendejo.

Several local linemen, EMTs and police officers are in Houston providing aid.
