Officials from across the Rio Grande Valley are reacting to a federal order impacting the McAllen International Airport.
On Tuesday, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean P. Duffy issued an order that canceled 13 routes between Mexico and the United States, including an Aeromexico route out of McAllen.
McAllen city leaders said Thursday they are working with congressional leaders to protect the direct air route to Mexico.
"This route has been a strong performer for McAllen and the entire Rio Grande Valley. It’s more than a flight, it’s a vital economic artery that supports commerce, tourism, and family connections across our binational region. We recognize the importance of protecting the livelihoods of our constituents and the economic momentum we’ve built together.”
City Manager Isaac J. TawilIn a statement, McAllen city leaders said they're in active dialogue with U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and Representatives Monica De La Cruz, Vicente Gonzalez, and Henry Cuellar to ensure federal actions reflect the realities and needs of border communities.
“McAllen stands at the front line of regional connectivity, commerce, and community. A ban on flights to Mexico strikes at the heart of our binational economy, our families, and our cultural ties.”
McAllen Mayor Javier VillalobosCongressman Henry Cuellar told ValleyCentral on Thursday that the cancellation will have a negative impact on McAllen and South Texas, citing the need to address the federal order.
“I understand what the Trump administration is doing, what the Mexicans are doing,” Cuellar said. “They’re putting our American airlines at a disadvantage. So, what the Trump administration did is they put a stop on that, on those flights. The problem is you’re painting everybody with the same paintbrush and it’s affecting the flights from the Valley into Mexico and other places. So, we need to address this.”
Congressman Henry CuellarOn Friday, several Valley politicians released statements on the route cancellation.
Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said the McAllen airport plays an essential role in the economy of the RGV, saying any disruption to flights will have an immediate impact.
“This route is much more than a transportation link. It’s a vital connection for families, businesses, and commerce across our binational region. A disruption to these routes doesn’t just affect McAllen; it impacts the entire Rio Grande Valley and the many small businesses that depend on tourism, trade, and travel from Mexico. Our state and congressional leaders understand the importance of air service to our border region. We appreciate their advocacy in working with federal agencies to find solutions that preserve air connectivity while balancing national transportation priorities.”
Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. CortezCongresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) sent a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duff on Friday, which reads in part:
"The cancellation of this route negatively impacts McAllen International Airport’s capability to continue to serve as a key airport. The airport serves an area that is growing twice as quickly as the rest of the U.S., and routes like this one are critical as the airport continues to grow and enhance their positive impact to our region."
Monica De La CruzCongressman Vicente Gonzalez urged the city of McAllen to speak up against the Trump administration's decision to cancel Mexican airline routes.
“It is unacceptable that the City of McAllen is being used as a pawn by the administration by threatening flights that serve as a vital economic engine for the Rio Grande Valley,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “McAllen Airport is a cornerstone of our regional economy. City leadership must do more to speak up against this Administration that is pushing policies that harm our region and economic prosperity. South Texans are strong, and it’s time all of our leaders step up. Pongance las pilas! Stop letting Washington push us around. Every member of Congress in South Texas should be publicly pushing back on this administration for the horrific policies that are affecting our local economy. Everything from tariffs squeezing our farmers to ICE raids creating a major labor shortage for small businesses is having a massive economic impact. This is not a time to stay quiet in an effort to appease the very powers that are ruining our local economy."
