MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Aim Texas Media, parent company of The Monitor, announced plans to sell its headquarters in McAllen to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

A board meeting held on Thursday by the UT System Board of Regents authorized UTRGV to move forward with the real estate purchase.

The Monitor first moved to its current location on 1400 E. Nolana Ave. in January 2004.

The headquarters serves as a production space for printing and distributing The Monitor newspaper across the Rio Grande Valley.

Stephan Wingert, Regional Vice President and Publisher of The Monitor, says although The Monitor has plans to relocate, it will remain committed to credible journalism.

"The Monitor has been a part of this community for well over 100 years and continues to be a strong pillar within the community," Wingert said.

"I can’t think of a better use for the Nolana property than in the support of higher education in the Rio Grande Valley through UTRGV."

UTRGV President Guy Bailey says The Monitor building would serve to advance the university's mission in academic and health affairs.

The building purchase has not been finalized or closed.
