EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — UTRGV added another tally to the win column with their 61-13 victory over Texas Wesleyan at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium, improving to 4-0 as they close out their non-conference games.
The Vaqueros' dominating offensive performance included rushing touchdowns from five different running backs and a running and passing touchdown by QB Eddie Lee Marburger.
For the first time at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium, UTRGV did not score in their opening drive, but with over eight minutes left in the first quarter, running back Djouvensky Schlenbaker scored a touchdown with a two-yard run. Before the end of the quarter, the Vaqueros put another touchdown on the board with a 12-yard run by TJ Dement.
Marburger, who had 223 passing yards in the first half, found wide receiver Tony Diaz in the end zone early in the second quarter. In the third quarter, he ran for a 32-yard rushing touchdown, his first of the season.
On the defense, Alijah Prosser recorded his second interception of the season and his first pick-six. Prosser picked the ball off of Wesleyan quarterback Cole Francis and took it 52 yards to the end zone.
Texas Wesleyan answered back with a pick-six late in the third quarter, making them the first team to score against UTRGV at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium. Their offense, which had struggled to perform early in the game, also recorded a touchdown to make the score 47-13 with over 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Vaqueros now prepare for their first Southland Conference game against Southeastern Louisiana at Southeastern, set to kick off at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27.
