The UTRGV men’s basketball team struggled at home Saturday, falling 84-52 to the Lamar Cardinals during a Southland Conference contest at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.
The loss marked the first at home for the Vaqueros this season, dropping to 3-1 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse and 5-4 overall.
The Cardinals dominated the opening half of the contest, jumping out to a 46-23 lead at the break behind a stout defensive performance and some hot shooting. Lamar held UTRGV to just 30% from the field during the opening period, while shooting 56% themselves.
Lamar continued its hot shooting during the second half, improving it to 60.7% by the end of the contest. Meanwhile, UTRGV continued to struggle, going on a nine-minute scoring drought to go down by as many as 36. A 3-pointer by Jaylen Washington late ended the Vaqueros dry spell.
KT Raimey finished as the Vaqueros top scorer, netting 10 points of 6-of-6 shooting from the line. Juniors Howie Fleming and Trey Miller each added eight points.
Alexis Marmolejos led Lamar with a game-high 18 points. Ja’Sean Jackson added 15 points while Adam Hamilton and Andrew Holifield scored 12 each.
UTRGV continues its seven-game home stand at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, taking on Northern New Mexico in a non-conference game at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
