WACO The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls for the ninth week in a row, saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 10-7 loss to the Baylor Bears on Tuesday at Baylor Ballpark.

Junior Thomas Williams led the Vaqueros (33-16) by recording his first-career multi-home run game, hitting a pair of 2-run shots while driving in a career-high tying four runs. His first 2-run home run came in the first to put the Vaqueros up 2-0. His second, in the sixth, brought the Vaqueros within 9-6. Williams now has eight home runs this season. He finished 3-for-4. Sophomore Easton Moomau singled ahead of both of Williams’ home runs, scoring each time and finishing 2-for-4. Graduate student PSJA High alumnus Jacob Sanchez also went 2-for-4. Sophomore Armani Raygozafinished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

In the third, sophomore Edinburg Vela alumnus Rudy Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk and then graduate student Edinburg Vela alumnus Isaac Lopez singled. One out later, Sanchez hit an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 3-0.

In the bottom of the inning, a pair of errors and a hit batsman allowed the Bears to load the bases with one out against senior Robert Bonilla (1-3). Tyriq Kemp hit a 2-run single. One out later, Hunter Simmons hit an RBI-single. After a walk reloaded the bases, John Youens got hit by a pitch to force-in a run and then Ty Johnson walked to force-in another run. Cortlan Castle capped the inning with a grand slam to put the Bears (30-18) up 9-3.

The Vaqueros got one back in the fourth when sophomore Evan Janner homered off Cole Stasio(3-1) to make the score 9-4. Janner has now homered in back-to-back games.

On the mound, junior Steven Oliva mostly quieted the Bears, pitching a career-high tying 3.0 innings, striking out a career-high four.

The only blemish came with two outs in the sixth when Kemp hit an RBI-single to put the Bears up 10-6.

The Vaqueros got that run back in the seventh with Moomau hit into an RBI-fielder’s choice to make the score 10-7.

Gabe Craig pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.
