UTRGV Chess hosts South Texas State Scholastic Championships

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Chess Program hosted the South Texas State Scholastic Championships.

The event was held on Saturday at the Edinburg campus.

Over a thousand kindergarten through high school students across the region competed in the championships.

"Chess players from San Antonio to Brownsville are playing for the title of best chess player in Texas," said Cole Smith-Munoz, Program Manager for the UTRGV Chess Program.

Winners of the state tournament are qualified for a play-off with the winners of the same sections of the 2024 North Texas State Scholastic Championships.

The winners will be Texas representatives for July's National Tournaments of State Champions in Norfolk, Virginia.
