HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a day of giving. The online fundraiser encourages the community to come together to give back to the university and support students who are pursuing higher education.
Assistant Vice President for Development of UTRGV, Kelly Quin, says UTRGV has over 140 different programs, schools, student support services, and scholarship funds. Anyone who donates has the opportunity to choose where the funds go.
UTRGV Program Coordinator for Development Meranda Saavedra added educational abroad scholarships, and the student food pantry also forms part of the fundraiser.
Saavedra says they reached $200,070 last year and hopes to fundraise more this year.
"We will host matches and challenges throughout the day, so there's competition between alumni classes, and with each year they graduated, trying to beat the others through different colleges as well," Quin said.
