UTRGV announces tuberculosis case among Cameron County campus community

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley announced that the Cameron County Public Health Department has confirmed a case of tuberculosis involving a member of the campus community.

The person affected is being treated for the illness and is isolated per the county's disease prevention protocol, the university stated in a release sent out to the campus community.

According to UTRGV, Cameron County is leading contact tracing efforts and is working closely with the university to inform of anyone who may have been exposed to the infected person.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tuberculosis, also referenced as TB, is a disease caused by germs that spread from person to person through the air.

The signs and symptoms to be on the lookout for include, cough, chest pain, and coughing up blood.

Testing for TB includes a blood test and TB skin test which are both effective in testing for the infection.

Additionally, Cameron County Health Authority Esmeralda Guajardo confirmed that the county is investigating a tuberculosis case linked to a Brownsville daycare.
