RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley announced it will transform a former Brownsville elementary school into a new space for the School of Art and Design.

UTRGV plans to invest $33.8 million to renovate Longoria Elementary School, which previously belonged to the Brownsville Independent School District.

Brownsville ISD and UTRGV agreed to terms and are now under contract to begin enhancements to the former elementary school.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to Brownsville ISD for their collaboration and assistance in facilitating this acquisition,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey.

Longoria Elementary School was one of three Brownsville campuses that closed its doors due to declining enrollment.

The UT System Board of Regents authorized the purchase of the former elementary school in February and will now move forward with enhancing the new School of Art and Design.

Enhancements will be designed with input from students, faculty and staff to create a unique space for the School of Art and Design community.

“We believe this is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Not only is it conveniently located near campus, but it also means our students can transition into great space sooner rather than later," Bailey added.

The new home for UTRGV School of Art and Design will be located at 2400 E. Van Buren St. in Brownsville, appoximately one mile from the main campus.
