A Donna resident was sentenced Tuesday for possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking activity, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
Roberto Segura Jr., 28, was sentenced to five years in prison after authorities conducted an undercover operation where they purchased a firearm from Segura who is a convicted felon.
He pleaded guilty on Oct. 1, 2024.
According to a criminal complaint, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives undercover agent communicated with Segura through text message where Segura agreed to sell a Remington Model 870 12-gauge shotgun for $300.
Segura had been previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced on Oct. 19, 2018.
In that case, he was convicted of stabbing a man on Feb. 14, 2017.
“Segura is prohibited from possessing a firearm and ammunition … because he was previously convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year,” the complaint said.
On July 1, 2024, the undercover agent bought the shotgun off of Segura at his residence.
Weeks later, on July 24 of that year, authorities conducted a search warrant at Segura’s residence where they found marijuana, nearly a pound of cocaine and body armor next to a firearm.
“Segura admitted he was in possession of the firearm to protect himself during his drug trafficking activity,” the release said.
Segura is to remain in custody pending a transfer to a prison facility which will be determined in the near future.
