HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The post-season for a handful of Texas high school sports could change drastically the next school year.

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) Legislative Council passed an amendment Tuesday to split divisions in postseason play for volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball and softball.

The amendment would lead to split divisions in 2A-6A volleyball, baseball and softball, 4A-6A soccer and 1A-6A basketball.

A press release from a UIL Legislative Council meeting states the proposed change would create two state championship brackets for teams to advance through the postseason.

The split divisions would be similar to what happens in 6A football playoff pairings where the four playoff-qualifying teams per district would be split into two brackets.

The two teams with the highest enrollments would be placed in the Division I bracket. The two teams with the lowest enrollments would be placed in a Division II bracket.

Ultimately, the proposed change would lead to twice as many state champions for the five sports impacted by the amendment.

The amendment would need to be approved by the Commissioner of Education before it goes into effect.

If approved, changes would be effective for the 2024-2025 school year starting August 1.
