U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez on Trump's tariff speech

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — President Trump announced new tariffs Wednesday on nearly all U.S. trading partners.

Trump said during his speech the new tariffs are designed to boost domestic manufacturing, which is expected to raise the price of all goods in the United States.

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez released a statement following Trump's speech and how it may impact South Texas residents.

"While I agree that we should always advocate for more fair trade, South Texans need economic stability, not chaos and higher prices," said Congressman Gonzalez.

The imposed tariffs for some countries start at 10% and reach up to 50%.

"Tariffs are a tool, not a strategy. The President must focus on lowering costs for South Texans, not starting global trade wars," Gonzalez continued.
