RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With heavy rain and potential flooding anticipated this week, the Texas Department of Transportation advises motorists to follow these driving safety tips.

Ray Pedraza, Public Information Officer for TxDOT, told ValleyCentral, crews are working overnight to respond to any emergency road closures, set up any barricades and have a high water rescue team on stand-by.

According to a news release from TxDOT, flash floods are the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Texas, making up 75% of fatalities.

Pedraza added, that during rainy conditions drivers should reduce their speed and increase the following distance between their vehicle and the one in front of them.

"The faster you go the longer it takes to stop, also make sure you turn on your headlights and make sure your windshield wipers and tires are in good condition," he said.

TxDOT recommends that motorists turn off their cruise control as it can quickly turn into "lose control."

"As little as six inches of fast-moving water, enough to barely touch most people's lower legs or cover their ankles, can cause drivers to lose control of a vehicle, even a pickup truck or SUV," TxDOT stated.

When encountering a flooded area, drivers are advised to turn around as flood waters may be hiding debris, tree branches, road damage, etc. that can damage your vehicle or cause harm.

"Never drive through still or moving flood waters, turn around, don't drown," Pedraza said.

Pedraza said motorists should be extra cautious when driving on slick roads and make sure any passengers as well as themselves are wearing their seatbelts.

In the case of your vehicle hydroplaning, TxDOT says drivers should ease off the gas pedal and brake, stay calm and wait for the skid to stop.

Lastly, motorists should stay alert, no matter the driving conditions, avoid driving drowsy or after drinking alcohol.
