TxDOT deploys walking billboards to promote pedestrian safety

PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Texas Department of Transportation officials are highlighting the importance of keeping pedestrians safe.

TxDOT is spreading the message by deploying street teams of walking billboards at various locations in Harlingen, McAllen, and Edinburg. They will display key safety messages for drivers and pedestrians.

TxDOT is targeting areas with high pedestrian activity or previously reported pedestrian crashes.

The department said factors contributing to unsafe conditions for pedestrians include crashes, drunk driving, failing to yield, and drivers not paying attention or just being reckless.

TxDOT says the campaign comes during a time when pedestrians are most vulnerable.

"October is the deadliest month of the year, and that's because the days are shorter and we have less daylight. So that puts pedestrians at risk. Stay alert, follow traffic laws, and watch out for one another," said Ray Pedraza, TxDOT Pharr District PIO.

If you missed the walking billboards in Harlingen, you can see them in McAllen on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersections along N. 10th St. from Nolana Avenue to Pecan Boulevard and in Edinburg from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. along W. University Dr. from McColl Rd. to S. 10th St. in Edinburg.
