It was a crowded field of contenders for three Brownsville City Commission seats on Saturday, with only one candidate reaching the crucial 50% of the vote plus one, which means runoff elections for two seats.
Nurith Galonsky Pizana, former District 1 city commissioner who unseated by Bryan Martinez in the May 2023 general election, this time around won 3,137 votes to Roy De los Santos’ 2,145 (40.4% to 27.6%) out of 7,758 total ballots cast in the race for Commissioner At-Large “B,” according to unofficial results.
The results saw fellow candidate Alejandro Garcia pull in 1,661 votes compared to 815 for Jason Moody (21.4% to 10.5%). De los Santos, currently commissioner for District 3, opted not to defend that seat but rather go after At-Large “B,” held by Commissioner Rose M.Z. Gowen M.D. since she was first elected to the seat in 2009.
In the commission District 3 race, Gustavo De Leon won 1,532 votes to runner up Denise Granado Chavez’s 774 votes (60.1% to 30.3%) with 2,549 total votes cast. In last place was Yvonne Barraza, who received 243 votes (9.5%).
The commission District 4 race is also bound for a runoff, with incumbent Pedro Cardenas winning 880 votes to 583 for Mike Rodriguez (33.3% to 22%) out of 2,842 total votes. Daisy Zamora took third place with 836 votes to Louie Tijerina’s 344 (31.6% to 13%).
The runoff election is scheduled for June 7.
