Two Edinburg women were arrested Sunday after attempting to re-enter the country in a stolen vehicle.

Yadhira Berenice Rodriguez, 22, and Ruby Zapata, 18, were charged with auto theft.

According to a news release, Edinburg police responded to the 2400 block of Moonlight Lane where the victim reported her 2024 Jeep Gladiator had been stolen from its designated parking space.

The victim realized her vehicle was missing after receiving a call from her sister asking about the Jeep’s whereabouts, with the release noting she also had several missed calls from officials with the Progreso Port of Entry and the Pharr Police Department.

Police said she was able to track the Jeep’s location to the Progreso Port of Entry through her vehicle’s mobile app.

An officer made contact with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection supervisor, who said the Mexican military alerted them about a Jeep they believed to be stolen crossed into the country.

The release stated the vehicle was stopped as it re-entered the U.S. at about 4:55 a.m. and the two occupants, later identified as Rodriguez and Zapata, were detained.

Moreover, police said the victim’s app showed the Jeep was started at 2:55 a.m. and crossed into Mexico at 4:08 a.m. before its interception. After Edinburg police provided a courtesy transport to the port of entry, the victim was able to recover her vehicle.

“We’re incredibly thankful to our partners at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Combined Auto Theft Task Force for their outstanding collaboration on this case,” Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala said in the release, which noted the case was solved through a collaboration between his department and the county’s task force.

“Because of their teamwork and quick communication with federal agencies, we were able to recover the stolen vehicle and take two suspects into custody within hours,” Ayala said.
