TSC hosts 3-day course for Region One counselors

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Texas Southmost College held a three-day professional development event for Region One counselors.

The event was held to show counselors what types of dual enrollment programs are offered, and how to care for students' needs, among other courses.

Alicia Ortega, education specialist with Region One Service Center, told ValleyCentral during the three-day course, counselors learned hands-on activities and dual enrollment courses that are offered for students.

"They are allowing us to get up close and personal with the equipment and really get that hands-on experience that we wouldn't have gotten back at the campuses," Ortega said. "Education is power and we want all our students to reach success."

She added counselors are usually removed from the day-to-day instruction, so by allowing them to participate in activities like these, they are getting to see the level of work it takes in person.

This three-day course is part of Region One's initiative to help raise student completion of dual enrollment courses, have industry networks and increase apprenticeships and internship offerings.
