HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy Counties have been placed under a federal disaster declaration for the severe floods that struck the Rio Grande Valley on March 27, announced U.S. Congressman for District 34 Vicente Gonzalez.

"I thank President Trump for granting a major disaster declaration for our region," said Congressman Gonzalez. "I hope that FEMA will swiftly deliver desperately needed aid and relief to our communities. I will continue to work with federal, state and local officials to ensure those affected by this disaster receive the necessary resources to begin the recovery and rebuilding process."

On April 29, Gonzalez, along with other local officials, sent letters to President Trump urging him to issue a declaration and empower FEMA to dispense urgency for areas that need assistance in South Texas.

As previously reported by ValleyCentral, the heavy rainfall experienced on March 27 and 28 severely devastated homes, businesses and vehicles across the Valley, leaving many to death with the aftermath even weeks after.
