Tropical Storm Alberto jeopardizes sea turtle corrals

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Sea Turtle Inc. announced that recent heavy rain, flooding and high tides, caused by Tropical Storm Alberto, have jeopardized sea turtle egg corrals on the island.

On Thursday, staff and volunteers helped protect the sea turtle nests from the flood waters that engulfed South Padre Island.

Second tropical threat could affect Valley this weekend

Additionally, the South Padre Island Public Works Department helped deviate water from potentially flooding the nests and helped secure thousands of turtle eggs from the rising water.

Sea Turtle Inc. stated that in the midst of the emergency, six additional eggs hatched and more than 380 hatchlings were safely released.
