A 28-year-old Edinburg man was arrested Wednesday for a 2021 murder following a traffic stop by Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies.
Jorge Havier Vasquez was taken into custody for the alleged murder Santana Tapia Jaimes, 27, who was killed on March 6, 2021, according to a press release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
On March 8, 2021, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Linda Street in Alton regarding a report of suspicious circumstance which was later reclassified to a homicide.
Witnesses stated that Vasquez was responsible for the death of Tapia, according to the release.
Investigators determined the murder occurred on March 6, 2021, near FM 1925 and Orange Street in rural Edinburg.
They were informed that Tapia was sitting with another man later identified as Alejandro Valdez Resendez in a dark-colored Dodge Ram truck when the shooting happened.
Investigators were informed that Vasquez washed off Tapia’s blood from his hands, the release states.
Authorities were able to locate Resendez’s Dodge Ram which had a “large” amount of blood on the passenger seat and were also able to track Tapia’s phone to Garza Auto Sales in rural Edinburg where Resendez was employed.
It was there that they found Tapia’s body in the cargo area of a Ford Expedition placed in trash bags and left inside.
A gunshot wound to the chest was also observed, according to the release.
“Investigators learned that Resendez was the last person who had the body of the deceased in his truck,” the release said.
They also learned that Resendez had fled the country to Mexico after disposing of the body.
A murder warrant was issued for Vasquez who remained a fugitive until Wednesday when he was arrested following a traffic stop conducted by sheriff’s deputies.
Resendez is also charged with tampering with evidence.
