A tropical storm or hurricane watch means that either of these weather events is possible near the watch area, usually within 48 hours. The National Weather Service issues watches and warnings to track the status of a storm when it comes to your area.

Additionally, a tropical storm warning means those conditions are expected within 36 hours, and a hurricane warning indicates hurricane conditions are expected in the area where the warning was issued.

Hurricanes could bring strong winds and storm surge near the coast, which could wipe out homes, vehicles, and could become deadly. A storm surge comes from water rising abnormally above the predicted ride levels during a storm. During a major one, water can rise above twenty feet.
