Texas Southmost College to hold FAFSA event for students, families

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened Wednesday for the upcoming school year.

Students at Texas Southmost College say the FAFSA season can be overwhelming for them and their families. They also say the process can be lengthy and complicated, but TSC officials emphasize that the college provides a variety of free resources to help make it easier.

Enya Poole, the Coordinator of Enrollment Services at TSC, emphasizes the importance of submitting the FAFSA application on time. Poole explains that students can qualify for more funding the earlier they submit their applications. Additionally, some students may be required to submit extra documentation, which can take up to two weeks to process, potentially causing delays.

"People don’t know that financial aid applications take about one to four weeks to be processed, so it’s better to do it as soon as possible when the application opens. They can even submit the financial aid application for five different institutions," Poole said.

To assist students and families, TSC is hosting a FAFSA and scholarship application drive, offering one-on-one guidance on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the ITEC Center.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Oliveria Student Services Center.
  • Thursday, Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at South Hall 117.

These events are open not only to TSC students but to any student in the Valley who needs help with financial aid.
