EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has certified the new Hidalgo County Courthouse following an inspection of the new facility.

The inspection was held Tuesday and will allow the project to move to its next phase before its grand opening.

"This is a significant step forward in the completion of one of the largest construction projects in Hidalgo County history," said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez.

Last week, the county was granted a Certificate of Occupancy by the City of Edinburg.

The Certificate of Occupancy allows the county to begin opening the new courthouse for public use.

The next step the county will take is moving legal documents and county employees into the new building.

"The transition from the old courthouse to the new will now begin in earnest," Cortez continued.

The move management process is expected to take 60 to 90 days.

It will involve millions of legal documents and hundreds of courthouse employees from County facilities.

Hidalgo County has also begun taking steps in the demolition of the old courthouse structure.
