
An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting a 22-year-old man in Cameron Park in May 2023.
Manuel Faustino Martinez, who was 16 at the time of the shooting and certified to stand trial as an adult, pleaded guilty Thursday to a count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, court records show.
He shot and killed Jose Alejandro Castillo Villarreal on May 13, 2023.
At the time, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that deputies responded to Cameron Park at around 4:03 a.m. in reference to someone being shot.
When deputies arrived, they found Castillo with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.
Castillo had fled the area, but was later found and arrested.
A charge of deadly conduct discharge firearm was dismissed at the sentencing, court records indicate.
