TDFPS highlights Elder Abuse Neglect Awareness Month

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services announced June is Elder Abuse/Neglect Awareness Month.

Along with TDFPS, the UTRGV Police Department, Hidalgo County District Attorney's Office, and Edinburg Police will partner for two free events in the Rio Grande Valley highlighting the month.

According to TDFPS, it is an important awareness topic as there are 191,576 individuals 65 years of age and older, and 86,853 Individuals who are 18-64 years of age living in the RGV.  

Public Event # 1

  • 5th Annual World Elder Abuse Day Awareness Vehicle Parade 
  • Thursday, June 13 from 8 to 11 a.m.
  • Bert Ogden Arena Parking Lot at 4900 S. I-69C in Edinburg
  • Decorated vehicles to travel the streets of Edinburgh to spread awareness about Elder Abuse/Neglect.

Public Event # 2

  • 6th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walk and Resource Fair
  • Friday, June 14 from7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  
  • 201 N. 1st St. in McAllen (Town Lake at Fireman’s Park)
  • It is an opportunity for the community to walk the track, meet members, and learn about resources available in the community.

Both free events are ways the public can learn more about the needs of the disabled and elderly community in the RGV.

In addition, multiple community organizations will work together to make both events possible.
