Students with special needs celebrated during college signing day

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Workforce Solutions and the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation hosted its second annual Moving Forward College Signing Day, an event that celebrated students with special needs plans after high school.

The event is designed to recognize and celebrate the achievements of students with special needs and anticipate the aspirations they have for the next step in their educational journeys.

The special event featured a signing ceremony with resource booths, information sessions and powerful messages for from community leaders for students to take in.

Francisco Almaraz, CEO of Workflow Solutions, said the idea for the event came from what high school athletes do on decision day.

"Its a big event for these students with disabilities," Almaraz said. "They have a lot of challenges but they overcome those challenges and they want to move forward and so we are trying to help them."

About 100 students from different high schools across the Valley attended Thursday's event.

"I want them to be recognized," Almaraz said about the students with special needs. "Just because you have a disability there's nothing wrong with that and they will succeed."
